The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) is a fantastic opportunity for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution. This visa allows you to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily. However, recent updates to this visa have introduced significant changes that applicants need to consider.

Here are the important things to Consider While Applying for a Temporary Graduate Visa (SC 485)

1. Updated Streams and Eligibility

The Subclass 485 visa now includes two primary streams:

  • Post-Vocational Education Work Stream: For international students with qualifications related to an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Applicants must be under 35 years old. The visa duration is up to 18 months, with Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders eligible for stays of up to 5 years.

  • Post-Higher Education Work Stream: For graduates with higher education degrees from Australian institutions. Applicants must be under 35 years old. Stay periods vary depending on the qualification level:

    • Bachelor’s degree: up to 2 years

    • Master’s by coursework: up to 2 years

    • Master’s by research: up to 3 years

    • PhD: up to 3 years Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for up to 5 years.

2. Age Limit Changes

The maximum age for applicants has been reduced to 35 years for both streams. Exceptions apply for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders, who can apply up to the age of 50.

3. Enhanced English Language Requirements

As of 23 March 2024, applicants must meet stricter English language requirements:

  • Minimum IELTS overall score of 6.5 (or equivalent), with no band score below 5.5.

  • The validity period for English language tests has been reduced from 3 years to 1 year prior to application.

  • Different requirements may apply for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders.

4. Changes to Eligible Qualifications

Effective 14 December 2024, the definition of eligible qualifications has been refined:

  • Graduate certificates are no longer accepted.

  • Graduate diplomas are only eligible if pursued immediately after a related bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program.

  • The Australian Study Requirement (ASR) has been removed.

5. Application Timing and Location

  • Applications must be lodged within six months of course completion.

  • Applicants must be in Australia at the time of application. Applications from outside Australia are no longer accepted.

6. Health Insurance Requirement

Maintaining adequate health insurance for the entire duration of the visa is mandatory. Ensure that appropriate coverage is secured before lodging the application.

7. Financial Considerations

Effective 1 February 2025, the application fee for the Subclass 485 visa will increase by 15%, bringing the base fee to $2,235. Applicants should budget accordingly for this cost and any associated expenses.

8. Plan Your Post-Visa Pathway

The Subclass 485 visa is temporary, so planning your next steps is critical. Options include:

  • Applying for skilled migration visas.

  • Pursuing further studies to enhance qualifications.

  • Seeking employer sponsorship for work visas.

9. Seek Professional Assistance

Given the complexity of the application process and the recent changes, consulting a registered migration agent is highly recommended. Professional guidance can help ensure compliance with the latest requirements and increase your chances of approval.
