As of December 7th, 2024, Australia has introduced significant reforms to its skilled visa program, making it easier for skilled workers to come to Australia.


Key Changes: SID 482 Visa

  • New Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): This streamlined list replaces multiple previous lists and focuses on in-demand occupations, including construction, cybersecurity, agriculture, and healthcare.

  • Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: This new visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, offering a clear pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers.

    • Core Skills Stream: For occupations on the CSOL and meeting specific salary thresholds.

    • Specialist Skills Stream: For highly skilled individuals earning above a certain income threshold.


Key Points to Remember:

  • Work Experience Requirement: SID visa applicants are required to have worked in the nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least one year full-time, or equivalent, in the five years before making their application.

  • English Language Requirement: Unless exempt, applicants must achieve an overall score of 5.0 and a minimum score of 5.0 in each band of the IELTS test, or an equivalent recognized English language test.

  • Visa Application Charges:

    • Base application charge: $3,115

    • Additional charge for applicants aged 18 or over: $3,115

    • Additional charge for applicants under 18: $780


Key Changes: ENS SC 186

  • Relaxed Work Experience Requirements: Applicants can now count all periods of sponsored employment towards their 2-year work experience requirement, even if it's not with their current sponsor.

  • Recognition of Related Work Experience: Work experience in a related field or a promotion can be counted towards the work experience requirement.

  • Simplified Evidence Requirements: Applicants are now responsible for providing evidence of their work experience, rather than relying solely on their employer.

  • Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT): The CSIT replaces the TSMIT, with the same initial threshold of AUD 73,150, indexed annually.

  • Modernized Occupation List: The ENS now uses the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which includes in-demand occupations in sectors like construction, cybersecurity, agriculture, and healthcare.


Core Skills Income Threshold:

  • For SID Core Skills Stream and ENS nominations lodged between December 7, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the threshold is AUD 73,150.


Specialist Skills Income Threshold:

  • For SID Specialist Skills Stream nominations lodged between December 7, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the threshold is AUD 135,000.
